A Means To An End

A trade show exhibit is a way to communicate your company?s marketing message in three dimensions. By its construction and appearance, it can tell show visitors something about your company before they even read your graphics or talk with one of your representatives. It can suggest you?re a traditionally-oriented company with old school principles and values. A different design might convey the message that your company is on the cutting edge of research, design or technical innovation. Your exhibit is a means to an end: a vehicle to carry your marketing message to attendees at a trade show exhibit.

A Variety Of Styles And Structures

An exhibit can also be considered a graphic display device, as they usually feature the exhibitor?s logo, company name and graphics in some form that provide information about the company and its products or services. Exhibits vary widely in their styles, from table-top displays to pop-ups (which make use of an expanding metal framework to support the display panels), banner stands, flat panel displays, to larger and more sophisticated custom wood and metal constructions, as well as inflatable and tensioned fabric displays. There may be elements of the display that are designed to hang from the ceiling above the rest of the exhibit. They vary in size and price as much as they vary in design and materials used.

The simplest displays are usually covered with some hook-and-loop compatible fabric, allowing everything from product samples to placards containing graphics or text to be positioned anywhere on these fabric (or fabric covered) panels.

Fitting Into A Trade Show

Exhibits are designed to fit into standardized exhibit spaces that, in North America, are usually sold in 10? x 10? increments. Various configurations can be achieved by purchasing two adjoining spaces for a 10? x 20? ?in line? exhibit, or four contiguous spaces making up a 20? x 20? ?peninsula? space, with aisles on three sides (one side of the exhibit adjoins two back-to-back in line spaces and ?caps? the aisle, very much like the end cap on the aisles at a supermarket). The same 20? x 20? space can also be configured as an ?island,? if it has aisles on all four sides.

There is virtually no upper limit to the size of exhibit spaces, and at some shows (heavy equipment, construction and video game shows, for example) exhibits can cover thousands of square feet.

What You Start With

The vast majority of exhibits at the vast majority of trade shows are in the 10? x 10? or 10? x 20? range. At most shows, the ?standard? configuration is a 10? x 10? space, surrounded by ?pipe and drape? walls. The back wall is usually eight feet high, covered with drapery panels suspended from a telescoping metal tube. The side walls, three feet high, are made of additional drapery panels suspended from more tubes, supported by metal poles at the corners of the exhibit. Many shows provide a six-foot draped table and two folding chairs as the basic d?cor for every exhibit space.

Into these spaces, exhibitors bring all sorts of trade show displays, from a table top that rests on the rented draped table, to a stand-alone exhibit that stands in front of the back wall?s drapes and features lighted panels, shelves of product samples, literature racks and other accessories that make the exhibit more three dimensional, as well as more visually interesting.
